It's 103 and I'm not in Hawaii

As I've written here before, I give lessons part-time at the nice training facility near my house that is owned by my long-time friend, Sue. She also coached me when I was showing our homebred warmbloods and she still coaches my sister at horse shows. Lately, since she has so many young greenies in training, Sue has been paying me to come over once a week and ride a few horses for her. That's all fine and dandy, except that this week it's been ungodly hot. I mean, like 103 degrees. And might I remind you, it's only the middle of June. To make matters more undignified, Sue is gone. Where is she? On vacation. In HAWAII. So while she's sipping some tropical drink concocted with pineapple juice, and sashaying around a beachfront hotel in a sarong, I'm trying to figure out how to un-stick my half-chaps from my jeans. With that visual image in your head, here is my little photo essay of today's activities:

Here I am aboard Zac, a young warmblood gelding. I am conveying how hot it is. Can you tell I took Theatre Arts 101 in college?

The second horse I rode, Rainey, gets to enjoy a post-ride shower. However, it appears that BJ, Sue's assistant, is enjoying the shower just as much if not more.

Once I DID succeed in prying the half-chaps from my jeans, I got to sit in the shade to give a lesson to Veronica, one of my students. She hauled in her project horse for me to give her my opinion on the mare. My opinion? Someone needs to turn on the air conditioner.

Well, I was going to say that it was hot here in North Dakota but I think compared to there it's nice and cool here. Lots of bad thunderstorms from the high humidity though, which isn't great.

At least if I was going to be hot, I got to do it with horses. I don't have a horse or have much access to horses, but I volunteer with therapeutic riding so that's what I did all morning. Little kids and horses. How much better can it get?

I love Zac! Such a beautiful color; I have always loved gray horses.

It’s been REALLY miserably hot here to. Although, we are in the midst of a brief reprieve. When I walked out this morning, it was 75 and somewhat DRY! I can’t believe it.

I have a lesson on Saturday, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed it stays this way. Knowing my luck, it’ll be upper nineties, dripping wet again. Maybe I should ask my lesson to be: swimming in the pond with my horse. :-D

Good luck staying cool!

I know how you feel, Cindy! Here in AZ it has been hovering around 100 degrees and frequently above. I am training a wild Mustang at the moment, which means I am doing quite a fair amount of physical activity, hefting old saddles and such. At least it isn't humid! Besides, I'm not riding the Mustang yet, so I don't worry about half chaps; I can just wear shorts.

wow! 103 degrees! I cant stand riding in over 95 degree weather. Your pretty tough cindy! Im a sissy after having a shaded indoor arena to ride in during summer.

Zac is adorable! That grey color is beautiful. He's sure a looker.

I love it when I'm not the only one out there willing to get that hot along with my horses to ride and also give a few lessons. You go girl.

It was even HOTTER than 103 in CT about a week ago- I think we topped off at 106. I had to ride a few horses the hottest day that week. The worst part was I had to ride INSIDE because of a show. The first horse I got out was DRENCHED in sweat from just sitting in his stall. I just rode for 15 minutes, thankfully! :-) But, this week has been much better- around 80 I think!!

Wow-
This just shows how dedicated you are...good job! It looks really hot there...

In the pic with you and Zac your shirt has 'sweat stains' under your arms. :P

Ha! I would've looked at these comments sooner, but this weekend I was not much more than a wilted puddle of goo due to the heat. I couldn't stumble my way to the computer.

It's interesting how we adapt to the climate to still be able to ride or otherwise enjoy our horses. While I'm not working with a mustang like Christine, I definitely wear shorts whenever I'm doing barn chores and giving my lessons. Well, MOST of my lessons! I end up with the most interesting tan lines.
